US calls on Israel to reduce Gaza war

US urges Israel to end war in Gaza 'in the near future'  US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan made the call in a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials in Tel Aviv last Wednesday.

US President Joe Biden has also separately requested Israel to be more vigilant in saving the lives of civilians in Gaza.

The US has been supporting Israel's attack on Gaza since the beginning, claiming that Israel has the right to defend itself.  But as the civilian death toll in the Gaza Strip continues to rise, the close allies are at loggerheads.

"I want them to focus on how to save civilian lives," Biden told reporters after an event at a medical research center near Washington on Wednesday.  That doesn't mean they have to stop attacking Hamas, but they have to be more careful.'

Earlier, the White House said Sullivan, Biden's top national security adviser, had pressed Israel to reduce the duration of the war.  Sullivan made the push after the Israeli defense minister indicated that the end of the war could take months.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant told Sullivan that Israel's fight against Hamas could take months to end.  "We will win and destroy them," he added.

According to US media reports, the US has called on Israel to end the first phase of the war by the end of this year. However, when a senior US official was asked about this, he refused to give details.

Sullivan will travel to Ramallah in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Friday to hold talks with Palestinian Authority leaders, the official said on condition of anonymity.

The official also said that the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar is approaching. He has American blood on his hands. No matter how long it takes, justice will be done.

On Wednesday, Sullivan traveled to Saudi Arabia to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the White House said.

Last Tuesday, Biden said Israel had begun to lose international support by carrying out "indiscriminate" bombings of Gaza in Palestine. This is his harshest response to the Israeli authorities to date.

However, in a video message on Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said they will continue fighting until victory over Hamas in the Gaza Strip is assured. Nothing can stop Israel.

Israel's Foreign Minister Eli Cohen also said that Israel's war against Hamas will continue with or without international support.
